People are so stressed these days from many situations, it’s good news that now work places offer a mental health day. What Is A Mental Health Day At Work? In short, a mental health day at work can be similar to a traditional sick day only you do not need to have a physical injury or illness to take the day off. The actual term “mental health day” refers to taking the day off to focus on your emotional wellness.
The World Health Organization (WHO) organizes a World Mental Health Day each year. The World Mental Health Day helps spread the knowledge of how important mental health awareness is. WHO is working with partners to launch a campaign about Making Mental Health and Well-Being for all a Global Priority according to their website. Things To Do On A Mental Health Day
Everybody is different of course so it would be up to what you feel like doing on your mental health day but here are some ideas below:
- listening to music that helps you feel happy
- going for a walk
- getting some exercise (walks, runs, dancing, working out)
- going out for a meal with a positive friend or family member
- drinking some tea to help relax
- writing, drawing or maybe painting
- watching some comedies
- pampering yourself (maybe a nice bubble bath or a spa day)
Benefits of Taking A Mental Health Day Off
Sometimes our work places can create a stressful environment for us. At times work can seem overwhelming to us at some it may cause us to need a break away from work. One extra day off can make a huge difference for people. That day off gives us extra time to focus on ourselves and take a breath. Many people already have the weekend off or maybe one or two other days during the week unfortunately, most of us are still “working” at home catching up on things we didn’t have time to tackle during our work days so we really are not getting enough time to focus on our well-being at times.
Some people may need a mental health day because other things are happening in their lives’ maybe a traumatic event, or some emotional illness and it’s hard to cope with every day life. If this happens the person can need time to process, rest and seek professional help. Depending on the severity the person most likely needs a little time to recover mentally.
Never allow anybody to try to make you feel you are being selfish for taking care of your mental health. It is very important to intentionally work on you to prevent any type of burn out that may come. It is important for your long term health and your physical health.
